About Charlie
Charlie Sandlan. Master Teacher & Artistic Director, Maggie Flanigan Studio (NYC)
For more than thirty six years, I have devoted my life to the craft of acting, and then to the art of teaching, mentoring, and guiding actors towards a career as a serious professional artist.
As Artistic Director and Master Teacher of the Maggie Flanigan Studio in New York City, my work is rooted in preserving the integrity of the Meisner Technique while helping actors develop depth, precision, and artistry.
Acting is not a hobby for anyone with serious ambition. For over two thousand years, it has been an essential art form, a vital contribution to human culture and understanding. It demands discipline, humility, and an ethical responsibility to illuminate the human condition.
At its best, acting is transformational.
That transformation requires craft, imagination, and integrity from those who choose the actor’s life.
My Philosophy
Actors are acrobats of the human heart.
To create within this art form requires:
1. Truth
The courage to see and portray life honestly
2. Discipline
Habits that sustain growth, consistency, and mastery
3. Imagination
The creative engine that transforms words on a page into vivid, fully realized human behavior
4. Responsibility
A commitment to the audience, the profession, and oneself
Teaching is not the transfer of technique alone.
It is the cultivation of the artist, nurturing curiosity, discipline, discernment, and a sense of purpose. The work must be approached with seriousness, patience, and respect for the craft.
Why I Built Return to Craft
Over time, even well-trained actors drift.
Waiting for Lefty by Clifford Odets. Participants are responsible for obtaining assigned plays used for study.
You begin working, booking, and staying busy. The material often no longer demands the rigor or depth that once sharpened you in the classroom. You work, but are not challenged in a way that fires the artist in you. Your technique dulls, and your quick, reliable habits replace artistry.
Or years pass after training.
Auditions become infrequent. Standards soften. Specificity erodes into generality.
In both cases, the actor is still working, but not in an artistic way.
Return to Craft exists to reverse that drift.
This program reconnects trained actors to their process, and to the deeper purpose that first drew them to this art form. It is designed for those who want to stop doing just enough to get by. RTC is for actors who want to restore clarity, precision, and artistic integrity to their craft.
My Track Record
- Over 20 years training professional actors in New York City
- Artistic Director & Master Teacher of one of the most respected acting conservatories in the United States.
- Actors trained under my guidance work consistently in theater, film, and television
- A career dedicated to preserving the accuracy and integrity of the Meisner Technique
Teaching is my life’s work.
Actors come to me because they want to be challenged, held to high standards, and taken seriously as artists.
RTC x Maggie Flanigan Studio
Return to Craft and the Maggie Flanigan Studio are distinct but deeply related expressions of the same artistic philosophy.
Both are rooted in serious training, disciplined work ethic, and a deep respect for acting as an illumination of the human condition.
Return to Craft articulates the standards, thinking, and approach that have been core pillars of my artistic life and teaching. The program offers clarity, structure, and a restoration of process.
The Maggie Flanigan Studio is where that work is embodied and practiced, in collaboration with fellow students and a master teacher. Ultimately, this work must be done in the classroom.
They are not interchangeable. They are complementary.
A Personal Note
My canvas is the classroom.
My students are my art.
I know the frustrations, doubts, and uncertainty inherent in this profession. I know the profound reward of living a creative life rooted in purpose, discipline, and truth.
I take the responsibility of teaching very seriously. I am entrusted with someone’s artistic development, and for me it is an honor and a privilege.
Return to Craft is a distillation of everything I’ve learned: the principles, discipline, and philosophy that have guided actors toward both professional excellence and artistic fulfillment.
If you are ready to recommit to your craft, sharpen your technique, and restore your sense of artistry, I will meet you there, and push you to work at the level you know you are capable of.
